20 places not to miss in Udine

A city of bookshops and inns, with a mysterious name and many faces, Udine is, so to speak, a country town, at once popular and refined, convivial and cultured. As the capital of the medieval Patria del Friuli, its oldest history is intertwined with legend, which has Attila as the creator of the castle hill that still dominates the historic centre.

A cultural tour can begin at the castle museums and then continue into the town centre to admire the masterpieces of Tiepolo and Casa Cavazzini, an elegant venue for modern and contemporary art. From the spectacular Piazza Libertà, which bears witness to Friuli's long link with the Venetian Republic, through medieval alleyways and picturesque irrigation ditches where the water is always transparent and crystal clear, you will reach Piazza Matteotti, a sort of city lounge surrounded by porticoes, where the people of Udine love to stop for a coffee or the inevitable evening aperitivo. Geographical centre of a region that has 10 DOC and 4 DOCG zones, with a total production of 80 million bottles a year, Udine cannot fail to honour this winemaking tradition, and it does so well with numerous historic osterias that also offer the specialities of local gastronomy.
